Imagine this, you’re getting ready for the day and you take a look in your closet and you ask yourself, what am I going to wear? You’re taking the weather into consideration while you begin flipping through the different shirts and dresses etc. in your closet. Then after a few minutes of slight despair you begin to think about what you haven’t worn a million times. If you can’t imagine this, then know that this is what I go through on a daily basis. I will rummage through my closet and drawers a few times before going back and finally giving in to the dress I feel like I’ve over worn. I am sure many of you have gone through this, but as you continue to read the rest of my article I hope I am able to enlighten you on a new way of shopping so you never run out of things to wear. Often times I’ve gotten asked, “Is that new? I love it!” replying with just a smile, my coy response is actually hiding my secret. In order to hear that flattering question one must be a smart shopper, that means buying things that will go with a million different articles of clothing. One can start at any one of their favorite stores, whether it’s a small vintage shop or a cozy boutique, you will become a successful shopper by following these steps:
1. Start off by considering the season, is it winter? A time when you’re in need of jeans, tights, jackets, long sleeves? Or is it summer? A time when you’re in need of dresses, shorts, loose tops? This step is crucial, because often times people will find themselves not having anything to wear because they buy way too much of the wrong type of clothing. If it is summer, stay away from the jackets, they may be cheap, but will you really be wearing that anytime soon?
2. The second step is by making sure that you absolutely love what you’re going to buy. If you try it on and you think okay it’s cheap and it fits me alright then it sounds like a good buy right? No. If it’s just alright chances are that when your deciding what to wear one morning you will just ignore it because it’s just alright and not “TO DIE FOR”. If you have any doubt in your mind just before you are about to purchase an item, think again because even though it is cheap, it may just sit in your closet forever.
3. This next step is also very important and a lot of people ignore it while shopping because they don’t think about the wardrobe they have back at home. If your shopping and you see this absolutely amazing pair of green straight legged jeans and you tell yourself these are a must, keep in mind the color of tops you have in your closet, do I have any shirts or shoes that will match this? If not then you know its best to just put it back, because once again you may just be burning a hole in your pocket without knowing it.
4. The keyword is BASIC and stick with it. That means buying colors that are neutral especially while buying essential items such as: shoes, coats, jeans, and purses. These are pieces you wear everyday which means that they have to match most of your wardrobe. When searching for these items the colors you want to buy are: Black, White, Navy blue, and khaki. My reason for this is that t buy those colors will go with almost anything.
5. Last but not least, make sure you buy things you know will wear after the current trend is over. If you’re the type to buy certain clothes or accessories because it’s the newest fad then you will find yourself broke after two months. Allow yourself to buy a few items that are in but do not go overboard. For example, you might notice that bell bottoms and clogs are in but think about it first before you swipe your card because in the end you will look back and wonder what the heck you were thinking. Keep in mind trends come and go but personal style stays forever. “The most courageous act is still to think for youself. Aloud.” -COCO CHANEL
